BUDC x What the Doc Opens New Worlds Through "The New Ruins" with Special Director's Conversation

School of Digital Media and Cinematic Arts, in collaboration with What the Doc International Documentary Film Festival organized by Documentary Club, extended learning opportunities with a special Film Screening + Director's Talk activity.

The event featured the screening of the documentary film "The New Ruins" (2024), which tells the story of beauty and memory from digital waste, along with a conversation with director Manuel Embalse, who won the Grand Prize in the International Documentary Film category and the Special Prize Green Doc Award for Environmental Documentary from the What the Doc Documentary Film Festival.

The New Ruins" (2024) is a film that presents the story of electronic waste that captivates and fascinates Argentine director Manuel Embalse. The film documents the remnants of discarded digital waste, including old computers, monitors, mobile phones, keyboards, handy drives, old discs, and much more. These items are things he encounters along the way while others overlook them. However, Manuel becomes fascinated, learns, studies, decodes, and gives life to these objects. He can be called a Media Archaeologist - someone interested in the whispers from discarded objects and brings them back to life through storytelling in film.

This activity attracted students who came to watch the film and participate in discussions, exchanging opinions and talking closely with the director. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, learning, and inspiration for students. Additionally, the director prepared commemorative postcards from the film, which he personally distributed to all student attendees and participants in a friendly manner at the Screening Room, Faculty of Digital Media and Cinematic Arts, Bangkok University.
