BU Professor Showcases International Art Exhibition "Her-story" in South Korea

Asst. Prof.Dr.Rittirong Chutapruttikorn, a School member at the Center for Environmental Innovation Research, has been selected to showcase his artwork "Herstory" in a gallery exhibition alongside other international artists. The work is displayed under "The Positioning," an art exhibition of Thai Artists, at Jeonil Building 245, a monumental and historical site of the Democratic Uprising of Gwangju, in Gwangju City, South Korea.

The artwork "Her-story"
In "Her-story," I dive deep into the emotional depths and truths of imprisoned women. Stories that remain silent, stigmatized, or fade away from public consciousness.

This work emerges from years of research into carceral space, human-centered design, and the experiences of women behind bars. In many architectural systems, the female prisoner remains an afterthought—rendered invisible in spaces designed by and for men. Yet their presence holds layers of pain, resilience, and memory that deserve recognition. Her-story is the voice of a mother separated from her child, a survivor of abuse, and a human being confined within a system that offers neither care nor dignity.
This body of work explores the duality of visibility and invisibility, guilt and grace, memory and erasure. Behind each barred window lies a story of being forgotten—and the quiet hope of being remembered.

Artist statement
Through observation, I find myself standing at the intersection of architecture and anthropology. My research journey has led me toward human-centered thinking and design with humanity. The principles that serve as a compass, quietly guiding every creative step I take. My gaze is drawn to the delicate relationship between people and their environments, especially among vulnerable populations. Those so often overlooked, with limited access to design that offers care and dignity. I hold a deep conviction that a well-designed environment can truly transform lives. Even those behind bars deserve spaces of quality, spaces that serve as a model for a complete and dignified life after release. In my work, I try to give voice to silence. The quiet echoes from the depths of lives we rarely see or hear. My hope is simple. Someone might pause, listen, and reflect on these silences. The voices that call us to recognize the inherent value and dignity of being human.
