Bangkok University Establishes Asia’s First “Institute of Digital Forensics and Cyber Security”

Bangkok University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the “Institute of Digital Forensics and Cyber Security,” in collaboration with P&P Law Firm and Cyber Forensic and Investigation (CFI) and further bolstered by cooperation from leading global technology partners: Magnet Forensics (USA) and MSAB (Sweden). These partners will provide the AXIOM and XRY software to support the development of Thailand’s digital-forensics and cyber-security professionals.
Addressing the Real and Growing Threat of Cybercrime

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aunya Singsangob, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bangkok University, explained that the main motivation behind establishing this institute stems from the realization that “cybercrime is no longer a future concern—it is a threat happening every single day.”
Thailand is facing increasingly complex cyber risks across national security, economic stability, and personal privacy. However, the country still lacks a “central mechanism” that systematically integrates technology, computer forensics, and legal expertise.
The establishment of this institute aims to bridge technology and law in a concrete way. Bangkok University becomes the first private university in Thailand—and the first in Asia—to take a leading role in strengthening national digital security. This reflects the rising importance of digital security, digital forensics, law, IT, and the use of digital evidence in the justice system. These are essential skills for students, faculty members, and the public in the digital era.

Mr. Idris Rozaili, Solution Manager at Magnet Forensics, emphasized: “This partnership with Bangkok University is highly meaningful because it reflects the importance of having knowledgeable, capable, and well-trained individuals to combat digital-age crime. Magnet Forensics is committed to empowering students and researchers with the tools, capabilities, and methodologies they need. This is ultimately an investment in the future of justice and societal safety.”

Three Core Missions That Will Transform Thailand’s Cybersecurity Landscape
The Institute of Digital Forensics and Cyber Security is not merely a laboratory—it will serve as a national “engine for human-capital development and digital trust.” Its three primary missions are:
1. Developing Knowledge in Digital Forensics & Cybersecurity
Integrating technical expertise with digital-evidence law.
2. Supporting Public and Private Sectors
Enhancing awareness of cybercrime and enabling access to knowledge in digital investigation, inspection, analysis, and forensic processes.
3. Building Collaborative Networks
Connecting universities, private sector partners, technology leaders, and national security agencies, while expanding international partnerships.

Mr. Graeme Pyper, Vice President Sales APAC at MSAB, stated that this collaboration marks a significant opportunity for future career pathways—in cybersecurity, law, and social impact. “The technologies we provide are essential tools that help law-enforcement agencies achieve their objectives effectively and produce positive outcomes for society.”
Participants will gain hands-on experience with leading technologies and internationally recognized knowledge that can be applied in top organizations as they enter their careers.
Developing Thai Talent to Global Standards
In the digital era, security is no longer solely the responsibility of the state—it is a “core skill for every profession.” The institute will serve as a center for Upskilling, Reskilling, and New-Skilling for diverse groups, including students in IT, engineering, and law; government officers; private-sector personnel; and members of the public seeking to improve their cyber-security literacy.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aunya added: “This collaboration is not just about training— it is about cultivating a new generation of professionals who possess both technical expertise and legal understanding. This is key to strengthening national security and justice in a sustainable way.”
Curricula will integrate global-standard technologies such as Magnet AXIOM and MSAB XRY, enabling learners to acquire specialized forensic and security skills along with internationally recognized certifications. Practical workshops will also be conducted with industry partners to create a high-quality “Digital Forensic Legal & Security Talent Pool” for the nation.

As stated by Mr. Paiboon Amonpinyokeat, Partner at P&P Law Firm: "The collaboration to establish the Institute of Digital Forensics and Cyber Security is a profoundly important step, as it promotes the exchange and transfer of expertise among specialists. This is essential for enhancing skills in in-depth analysis and the management of complex evidence, as well as for supporting personnel to obtain Professional Certifications that are recognized globally.
We firmly believe that qualified personnel are the most crucial foundation. This combined effort will help create a network of practitioners with excellence in skills, fully prepared to tackle the challenges of current and future technological crime effectively and sustainably."
Toward Thailand’s “National Digital Trust Center”
Within the next 3–5 years, the Institute aims to evolve beyond a training center into Thailand’s “National Digital Trust Hub,” playing a pivotal role in advancing digital-forensics and cybersecurity capabilities nationwide.

As stated by Mr. Nathapong Limpdaengskul, Executive Director at CFI: "In the current era, where digital technology has become an integral part of every aspect of our lives, the challenges in cybersecurity and digital crime have simultaneously grown in complexity and severity. "Digital Evidence" has emerged as the crucial key to solving cases and is the primary focus in the search for truth within the judicial process. Consequently, the discipline of "Digital Forensics" is no longer merely a specialized field; it has become an indispensable mechanism for building security and reliability in our digital society.
Furthermore, with the support from Digital Forensics technology developers like Magnet Forensics and MSAB, the establishment of the “Institute of Digital Forensics and Cyber Security” is not solely about developing curricula for "experts" in Digital Forensics. Rather, we are collectively building a stable foundation for the "future" of Thailand’s digital justice process."

The Institute will become the central connecting point for government, private sector, and academic institutions within the cybersecurity ecosystem. It will also support the Thai justice system through international-standard digital-evidence practices—enhancing public and business confidence in safe, transparent digital technology use.
The long-term vision includes becoming a Regional Hub for Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity in ASEAN, strengthening the region’s ability to confront borderless cyber threats

Bangkok University’s establishment of this institute—an unprecedented initiative for a private university in Thailand—demonstrates its proactive role in driving future-ready skills and shows how private universities can act as catalysts for building a resilient national cyber ecosystem. It also reinforces Bangkok University’s identity as a “Practical University,” committed to developing learners’ skills and enhancing the capabilities of government and private-sector personnel to elevate Thailand’s overall strength in Digital Forensics & Cybersecurity.
