Guidelines on Teaching and Learning
and Preparation for Bangkok University International Program New Students
Academic Year 2020
---------------------------------------------
Bangkok University International Programs would like to inform new students for the Academic Year 2020 as follows:
1. Teaching and Learning Guidelines and University Preparedness
According to the measures set forth by the Government and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, taking into account students’ and relevant parties’ health, the university has thus become well-equipped in implementing quality hybrid/blended learning as well as online learning in all academic programs. The university is confident that with these teaching approaches, students can develop essential skills for the future, maximize their potential, obtain equivalent learning outcomes to classroom teaching and learning, and most of all, enjoy their learning experiences.
1.1 Teaching and Learning Guidelines
For the first semester of the Academic Year 2020, first-year students are entitled to select from two learning options:
A) Hybrid/Blended Learning and B) 100 Percent Online Learning. The selection of learning options will take place during the new student orientation week, early August 2020. The guidelines for the chosen options will be provided subsequently.
A) Hybrid/Blended learning embodies both on campus and online learning and consists of two parts as follows:
(1) Guided lessons: This part employs “Active Learning Approach,” incorporating flexible teaching methods in which students are facilitated, supervised, counseled, and closely monitored, through several channels of communication, by teachers, coaches, and teaching assistants, along with domestic and international experts from multiple professions within the university network (Ecosystem). Taken into account of students’ different learning interests and potential, as well as learning content, environment, and situation, the processes of teaching and learning will take place both inside and outside the classroom on campus, with the use of online alongside offline education technology. In addition, a variety of teaching strategies include, to name a few, project-based learning, problem-based learning, case studies, task-based learning, and research-based learning.
(2) Self-guided lessons: This part embodies such materials as teacher-provided video clips or online resources, where students can study at a convenient time and place through computers, computer tablets, mobile phones, or other electronic devices.
B) 100 percent online learning includes both synchronous and asynchronous learning. The former refers to the type of learning that takes place in real time, so-called a "virtual classroom." This means that students and their classmates along with teachers interact in a specific virtual place, at a specific time through specific online mediums such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. The latter refers to the type of learning that takes place within a flexible time frame. Students can access several types of e-learning materials provided by their teachers, including streaming videos for viewing, articles for reading, assignments for completing, or self-guided lesson modules. A variety of active teaching strategies include, to name a few, project-based learning, problem-based learning, case studies, task-based learning, and research-based learning. Communication channels between teachers and students include, but not limited to emails, LINE application, Facebook, and WeChat.
However, if the Government and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation do not permit teaching and learning at the university, only option B - 100 percent online learning method will be executed.
2. Class Schedule
The first semester starts on Monday, August 17, 2020 and ends on Friday, December 4, 2020. Class schedules of these courses can be downloaded from the Website: https://ursa.bu.ac.th or accessed via Google Calendar from each students’ email from Monday, August 3, 2020 onwards.
3. Student Care Service and Online Learning Solution
As the online programs employed in the teaching and learning process are simple, students can learn together with peers, and thus need not worry about how to master them. However, if students encounter difficulties, they can request support from the following channels:
3.1 For difficulties associated with the teaching and learning process, contact the teacher or bulinks.bu.ac.th (Faculty Line or Faculty Facebook).
3.2 For difficulties associated with self-study, contact teachers according to their office hours.
3.3 For difficulties associated with online learning tools, contact BU IT Support LINE Official Account by adding friends at Line ID: @snz0536j or contact BU International Support LINE Official Account at Line ID: @957ujvix.
4. Guidelines for University Entry
If permission for university entry is granted either to use the whole or certain areas for teaching and learning, hybrid/blended learning will be carried out as appropriate under the Space Management Policy and the Social Distancing Measures announced by the Government. In this regard, Wi-Fi service is available for students on campus. Upon entry into the university, students must comply with the measures to control Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the Distancing Measures strictly stipulated by the university. In the event that teaching and learning is not permitted at the university, 100 percent online learning will be executed.
5. Relationship Building Activity
Activities for building relationships between new and senior students, both in the same or different schools, are still organized by the Student Club and Department for Student Development and Activities in collaboration with the student committee of each school. The activities can be carried out through face-to-face interaction and/or the university online communication channels, including BU Connect, Facebook Page: “Be You LIFE,” and BeU Beyond. In addition, each faculty, club, and activity group has already prepared for students other online communication channels such as Facebook, LINE Group, Instagram and Zoom Community.
